3 Things That Help Me Cope as a Highly Sensitive Artist in Today’s World

As a highly sensitive person, navigating the world as an artist can sometimes feel overwhelming. The constant stimulation, emotional highs and lows, and the pressure to produce can weigh heavily. But over time, I’ve found ways to protect my energy and keep my creativity flowing. Here are three things that help me cope as a sensitive artist:

1. A Good Cry

It might sound simple, but sometimes a good cry is all I need to release emotional build-up. As someone who feels deeply, emotions can get bottled up, especially when I’m working on a new painting or juggling different projects. Crying is like wringing out a sponge: after the tears fall, I feel lighter, as if a weight has been lifted.

It’s a reminder that it’s okay to let out what I’m holding in. Emotions are part of the creative process, and they shouldn’t be suppressed. Instead, I allow myself to feel and release, and then I’m ready to move forward.

2. Morning Pages

If I had to pick one habit that’s truly transformed my mental clarity, it would be my morning pages. They’re my holy grail. I take a few minutes every morning to write down whatever’s on my mind. It’s a stream-of-consciousness exercise where I don’t hold back.

This practice clears out all the clutter in my brain, making room for creativity and focus. Afterward, I feel like I’ve emptied out all the noise so I can move forward with my day, unburdened and ready to create.

I leave all my worries behind me when I’m active :)

3. Protecting My Spirit

In today’s fast-paced, information-overloaded world, I’ve learned the importance of protecting my peace. This means setting boundaries on what I allow into my space. I don’t keep Instagram on my phone.

I don’t watch the news, and I don’t allow myself to mindlessly scroll through social media. It’s not about being ignorant; it’s about guarding my spirit. When I protect myself from external noise and negativity, I’m able to stay centred and focus on what truly matters: my art, my well-being, and my creative process.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of today’s world, but as a highly sensitive person, I’ve learned that it’s essential to nurture and protect my mental and emotional health. By embracing these three coping mechanisms, I’ve found a balance that allows me to continue creating and living with intention. If you’re sensitive, too, I hope these practices can help you find some peace amidst the chaos.

Peacefully,

Sabina
